Chapter 19

Vulc

It’s been two days since Ares decided it was time to put Emmy behind a locked door with the windows nailed shut. Two days since Hades and I went along with it. She hasn’t talked to us once. Anytime I go into the room, she’s on the bed with her back pointed firmly at the door. She ignores any attempt at conversation and if we try to push the issue with her, she gets up and goes into the bathroom, where she puts herself behind yet another locked door and turns on the shower so that she can’t hear us.

The only one of us to get any reaction from her is Cerberus. And that’s because the dog is the only one of us that hasn’t broken her heart. Anytime Hades or I bring him up to see her, she buries her face in his fur and gives him love and kisses, murmuring endearments to him under her breath while he gives her licks and grins like a dope.

Ares hasn’t gone to see her once.

At least, not while she’s awake. I’m pretty sure he sneaks in during the middle of the night and just stands over her while she sleeps.

Creepy, but I understand his inclination.

He feels too fucking guilty to face what he’s done. The pain and betrayal in her eyes. How fucking crushed she is. He’s probably afraid she’ll look at him like she looks at Matello. Honestly, she might.

I can’t even blame her.

Ares is right though, she is too reckless. She will go off with a half-cocked plan to lure Matello out and she’d probably get killed before she’s able to accomplish anything.

Doesn’t make this easier, though.

Hades is cooking tonight. He’s gone all out with the meal, making things he knows Emmy loves. Mac and cheese (homemade, not from a box), roasted chicken, roasted zucchini, and a slice of chocolate cake.

She’s hardly eaten anything.

With any luck, this will tempt her into getting some food into her body.

“I’ll take it up,” I say, and Hades growls at me. I arch a brow. “You took her breakfast and lunch. It’s my turn.”

He relents, releasing the tray into my care, and I head toward the stairs. “Vulc?” Ares’ voice stops me and I hate the shiver of resentment that works its way over my spine. It’s his fucking fault she hates us right now. “Stay with her until she eats it.”

I frown. But then nod. He’s right, she needs to eat and if I have to sit there all night, I will.

When I enter the room, Emmy is not on the bed like normal. She’s on the window seat, staring outside with a wistful look on her face.

“What have you told my mother?” she asks, not looking at me.

I swallow. I don’t really want to tell her. Every time Paloma calls on Emmy’s phone, we ignore it, because Emmy had done that too. Not picking up for the daily chat. But when Ms. Bryant calls, we have to pick up, or she’ll worry that something is wrong.
